Butterflies begin as humble caterpillars—this much, everyone knows.
But what is too often forgotten is the long and perilous journey before they can climb the slender bough and spin the silken shroud that will cradle their becoming.
Many fall before the climb; many lack the strength, or the courage, or some secret spark the journey demands.
Yet for those who endure, there is still the final trial—
the slow parting of the cocoon, the trembling spread of wings, the leap into an unfamiliar sky.
This too calls for courage,
but in that moment, they fulfill the promise written into their being from the very first breath.
Caterpillar in the tree, who shall you be?
Though your feet cling close to the branch,
your dreams roam the vast, sunlit air.
Wish, if you will, under moonlight or noon—
fear not the night, but hold fast to hope.
For there will come a morning
when the chrysalis parts like dawn itself,
and the butterfly you have always been
unfolds her silken wings.
Then—
Butterfly, butterfly, fly away!
The day you dreamed of is here at last.
Rise into the light,
and let the winds bear you home.
