Serendipity: One Drawer at a Time

Posted on

Almost every time I dig deep into my underwear drawer, I find something that shouldn’t be there. I don’t know how it got there. Maybe someone slipped it in while I wasn’t looking. Or maybe it happened one weekend when I was having too much fun to properly sort my laundry.
But there it is—a pink panty, surrounded by my boxers.

What am I going to do? Start calling people and ask who it belongs to? Or maybe just cut it up and use it to clean my camera lens?

Everything in life has a reason for being there—an opportunity.
An opportunity might be to call whoever that underwear belonged to. Call them back.
Or maybe it’s the start of a new cleaning ritual.

You never know in life what’s going to happen next.

Such is life—Serendipity.

Now, I am not saying life is just a drawer full of underpants—but if you think about it long enough, it might not be too far off. One morning you’re reaching for the usual—the predictable, the routine, the boxers you’ve known and trusted—and lo and behold, you come up with something unexpected: a pink, lacy mystery nestled right among the cotton conformities. Now what in the high holy heck is that doing there?

That, my friend, is what scholars and saints alike have come to call serendipity—though where I come from, we just call it “life being funny again.”

In plain terms, serendipity is the occurrence of unexpected, fortunate discoveries—finding something valuable or delightful when you weren’t looking for it. But your underwear-drawer metaphor adds a beautifully human twist. It’s not just about finding something—it’s about wondering why, making meaning, and seizing the opportunity, even if it starts with a misplaced pair of briefs.

I am saying serendipity isn’t just about luck. It’s about noticing when life hands you something strange, puzzling, or unfamiliar—and seeing possibility in it. Maybe it’s a mystery. Maybe it’s a memory. Maybe it’s the start of a new story.

In your drawer of life, even the mismatched underwear might be a sign to reconnect, reinvent, or rediscover.

So yeah—serendipity is not just stumbling on gold.
Sometimes, it’s stumbling on boxers two sizes too small and thinking, “Huh… there’s something here worth exploring.”

So next time life hands you something that don’t quite fit—be it panties in your drawer or a surprise in your day—don’t get flustered. Tip your hat, squint one eye, and say,
“Well now, this here’s peculiar.”

Because the truth is, fate don’t always send telegrams.
Sometimes it leaves a clue in your sock drawer, wrapped in lace and wonder.
And if you’re wise—or just curious enough—you might find out it ain’t a mistake at all.

It’s a sign that something unexpected is knocking.
All you’ve got to do… is open the drawer.
