My Cat as a Sensei (先生)

Posted on

The first steps in the morning are always the hardest. That moment when you have to roll out of bed and actually start the day. But I don’t get to debate it much—because I have a little white cat who has already decided it’s time.

At 5:30 sharp, she meows and meows. If I try to ignore her, she climbs close and meows right in my ear until I give in. I get up, feed her, and let her out to the back patio room. She knows what has to be done. She has a plan. And if I get in her way, she lets me know about it.

Funny thing is—she reminds me that I also have a plan. That I should get up, get going, and do something I actually want to do. She’s helping me keep a habit, whether I like it or not.

Then at night, around 10:00, she meows again. This time it’s bedtime she’s after. She’s like a snooze button that lets me push her off a couple of times—she curls up while I keep writing or working—but come 11:00 she insists again. And she’s not happy until the lights are out and I’ve gone to bed.

Some people use an app to track their routines. I have a cat. And she’s smarter than most apps.

Because really, she has the right idea: go to bed early, wake up early, and take on the day. Enjoy the sun. Don’t waste time fighting it.

Ben Franklin said it well,“Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise. Employ thy time well, if thou meanest to gain leisure. Your net worth to the world is usually determined by what remains after your bad habits are subtracted from your good ones.”
