Every few years a new crop of young people rediscovers communism like it’s a shiny toy someone left in the attic.
They dust it off, hold it up to the light, and say, “Why don’t we try this again?”
Well, kids… there’s a reason.
Communism is a great idea.
It’s just designed for the wrong species.
Human beings aren’t ants, bees, or whatever polite collectivist creature people imagine when they’ve had too much YouTube and not enough life. We are—brace yourself—self-interested. Deeply. Persistently. Hilariously.
And that’s the strange advantage of capitalism:
It leans into what we already are.
It doesn’t ask us to become angels or saints.
It assumes we’re flawed and then makes use of the flaws.
Define communism: –“From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs.”
Beautiful.
Poetic.
Looks great on paper.
You could knit it on a blanket and sell it at Whole Foods.
But here’s the problem:
It doesn’t scale. At all.
At Home? Sure. In a Village? Maybe. A Nation? Forget It.
Think about it:
You’re already a communist at home.
Got kids?
You don’t bill them for rent, utilities, or food.
You don’t charge them interest when they borrow your sanity.
You give them everything they need and expect nothing in return.
That’s communism.
Stretch out to a neighborhood—maybe you’re a socialist.
You try to help, share, be decent.
But once you get to the national level?
“Yeah… fuck those guys.”
That’s human nature. There’s always an in-group preference.
Family → clan → tribe → country → “everyone else can sort themselves out.”
We’ve had 200,000 years to practice this instinct.
Utopia doesn’t overwrite DNA.
The American Version: Marxism with a TikTok Filter
Now, America’s homegrown version of communism isn’t even classical communism.
It’s something much stranger: American Marxism, also known as “woke.”
Real Marxists tried to redistribute wealth.
Whether you agree or not, that at least makes internal sense.
But the new model?
They want to redistribute status.
Not money.
Not opportunity.
Not resources.
Status.
That is a recipe for national schizophrenia.
Because wealth can be shared.
Status can’t.
There’s only so much of it, and everyone wants more.
Try to redistribute that and watch people lose their minds.
You get the USSR, Cuba, Venezuela, and China, and the likes Stalin, Castro, Chavez Mao. And then they try to go away from it to a more capitalist model but it is still a failure.
