Foreword

Every generation gets one invention that changes what all the other inventions mean. Steam changed what muscle was worth. Electricity changed what night was for. The computer changed what memory costs. Artificial intelligence is changing what thinking itself is worth — and it is doing it faster than any of the others did.

This book was not written in a study or a newsroom. It was written in the middle of the change, one piece at a time, by someone who works with these systems every day — building with them, arguing with them, catching them lying, and occasionally being startled by how right they are. That is the only honest vantage point there is right now. The experts are guessing. The companies are selling. The rest of us are living in it.

So this is a field report, not a textbook. Some of it is explanation: how these machines actually work, stripped of the magic tricks. Some of it is warning: about the money, the crime, the manipulation, and the quiet ways power is moving. Some of it is a story, because sometimes the truest way to say what a thing is, is to show it happening to someone.

You do not have to agree with all of it. You do have to reckon with it. That reckoning is the real subject of this book — and it has already begun.
